XADM: No Access to Diagnostics Logging Tab on Server Properties

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Exchange Server Administrator program, you may not be able to access the Diagnostics Logging tab on the properties of the server object. The following Event ID may be logged in the System log:

Event ID: 7028
Source: Service control manager
Description:
The winreg registry key denied access to system account programs. The Service Control Manager took ownership of the registry key.


RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
To resolve this issue:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) and locate the following subkey:


  2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\Winreg
  3. Select the Winreg registry key, and on the Security menu, click Permissions.


  4. Add the Local Administrators Group with Full Control to the registry key Permissions page.


  5. Quit Registry Editor.
