XADM: Delivery Receipts Not Properly Routed to MTA for Delivery, Causing 2006 Events

SYMPTOMS

During normal operation, the following event may appear in the application event log:

Event ID: 2006
Source: MSExchangeIS Private
Category: Transport Sending
Description: The generation of a delivery report or a non-delivery report has failed due to error 0xfffff9bf.


CAUSE

Delivery receipts (DRs) are not being properly routed to the message transfer agent (MTA) for delivery when delegates and recipients exist on different servers. See the "More Information" section for exact steps to reproduce this issue.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Exchange Server service pack that contains this fix.

NOTE: When you start this version of the information store, the private information store database is automatically upgraded to a new format. After the database has been upgraded, you can restore an earlier version of the Store.exe file on the server, but only if it is version 5.5.2651.32 or later. If you restore an earlier version of the Store.exe file after the database has been upgraded, you can no longer start the information store on the server.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

On two servers (ServerA and ServerB) within the same Exchange Server site:

On ServerA:
  1. Create a mailbox, call it Executive, and associate the mailbox with its own separate Windows NT account.


  2. Create another mailbox, call it Delegate1, and associate the mailbox with its own separate Windows NT account.


On ServerB:
  1. Create a mailbox, call it User, and associate the mailbox with its own separate Windows NT account.


  2. Create another mailbox, call it Delegate2, and associate the mailbox with its own separate Windows NT account.


  3. Log on to the mailbox called User.


  4. In the client, on the Tools menu, click Options. On the Preferences tab, click Email Options, and then click Tracking Options.


  5. Click to select the Request Delivery Receipt for all messages I send check box.


  6. Log on to the Executive mailbox.


  7. On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Delegates tab, add Delegate1 and Delegate2, giving them Editor access to the calendar. Also click to select the Delegate receives copies of meeting-related messages sent to me check box for each delegate.


  8. Create a meeting request, and invite User.


  9. Log back on to the User mailbox, and accept the meeting request.


  10. Log on to the Delegate1 mailbox.


  11. On the File menu, click Open, click Other user's folder, and click the calendar folder for the Executive mailbox.


  12. Modify the time of the meeting, and then click Send Update.


  13. Log back on to the User mailbox, and accept the update.
