XCON: Message Transfer Agent May Stop on 9405 Error with Access Violation

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Server message transfer agent (MTA) may repeatedly stop with the following event in the Windows NT Event Viewer:

Event 9405:

An unexpected error has occurred which may cause the MTA to terminate. Error: Access violation (0xc0000005) at Address 0x5e215a reading from 0x0. [BASE XFER-OUT 20] (16)


CAUSE

The MTA is not properly deleting an entity control block after routing a message.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 service pack that contains this fix.
