SYMPTOMSThe message transfer agent (MTA) for Exchange Server version 5.5, 5.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1), 5.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2), and 5.5 Service Pack 3 (SP3) may stop unexpectedly if you restart it after an abnormal shutdown. The MTA logs an event 9405 in the application event log that is similar to the following: Note that the address for the access violation may differ slightly depending on the version of the MTA. This problem is encountered at address 0x42572e for the Exchange Server 5.5 SP2 MTA. Servers that are configured to generate User.dmp files and Drwtsn32.log files using the Drwtsn32.exe program may produce a call stack similar to the following for the problem thread:
RESOLUTIONA supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but
it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems
experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this
specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 service pack
