SUMMARYThis article discusses the recommendations for troubleshooting issues on Exchange Server computers on which antivirus software is installed. MORE INFORMATIONFile-Based Antivirus SoftwareFile-based scanning antivirus software can be installed on an Exchange Server computer. However, scanning should never be run against the application and database files of an Exchange Server computer. Doing so can result in false reports of a virus and damage Exchange Server databases when attempting to disinfect the file. If you choose to run a file-based virus scanner on an Exchange Server computer, remove the Exchange Server-specific files and directories from the scheduled scans and real-time scanning.Exchange Server Information Store Scanning SoftwareMicrosoft provides the application programming interfaces (APIs) that give other manufacturers the ability to write antivirus programs that scan the information store. If this type of software is running on your Exchange Server computer and you are experiencing a problem, research the issue and follow normal troubleshooting procedures. If these do not resolve the issue, temporarily disable or remove the antivirus software to determine if it is contributing to the problem. If it is not contributing to the issue, it may be re-enabled.If the problem does not exist after you have disabled or removed the antivirus software, contact the manufacturer of the antivirus software for the most recent update. If the most recent update of the software does not resolve the problem, continue working with the antivirus software manufacturer and Microsoft to pursue a resolution to the problem.
