XCON: Mail Is Backing Up in Connector Queues, Events 289 and 1294 Appear

ID: Q246278

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.5

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, you may notice that mail is backing up in connector queues. When you ping the destination server, you may receive either slow responses or complete timeouts. Also, Event Viewer may display the following events:

Event ID: 289
Source: MSExchangeMTA
Type: Warning
Category: X.400 Service
Description: A connection to /O=OrganizationName/OU=SiteName/CN=Configuration/CN=Connections/CN=ConnectorName could not be opened. [MTA XFER-IN 17 26] (12)

Event ID: 1294
Source: MSExchangeMTA
Type: Warning
Category: X.400 Service
Description: An association with entity /O=OrganizationName/OU=SiteName/CN=Configuration /CN=Connections/CN=ConnectorName ended abnormally. [198 1 0 1 PLATFORM KERNEL 20 130] (10)

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of network-related problems external to Exchange Server performance. When there is not enough network bandwidth for any additional traffic, the Message Transfer Agent is unable to create the necessary connections.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, troubleshoot network connectivity and bandwidth issues.
