IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When you administer Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, you may notice that mail transfer across connectors is extremely slow. Event Viewer may record the following events in the application log:

Event ID: 3120
Source: MSExchangeMTA
Type: Warning
Description: A resource limit has been reached when attempting to open an association. Number of sessions configured: 30

Event ID: 9316
Source: MSExchangeMTA
Type: Warning
Description: An RPC communications error occurred. No data was sent over the RPC connection. Locality table (LTAB) index: x. Windows NT error: 9317.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the Message Transfer Agent (MTA) experiences a resource shortage.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this behavior, change the 'Concurrent XAPI sessions' value in the registry:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

  2. Locate the following key in the registry:

  3.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeMTA\Parameters\
  4. Double-click the Concurrent XAPI Sessions value.

  5. Type 50 in the Data box, and then click Hex in the Radix area.

  6. Quit Registry Editor.
