SYMPTOMS

Exchange Server Setup may not work and you receive the following error message:

While attempting to start the Microsoft Exchange Event Service, the following error was encountered:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion
Microsoft Windows NT

The Windows 2000 or Windows NT Event Viewer may display the following Event ID:

Type: Error

Access Denied

CAUSE

The Exchange Server service account specified is not part of the Local Administrators group.

RESOLUTION

Add the Exchange Server service account to the Local Administrators group.
