XCLN: Cannot Add Address to Personal Address Book

ID: Q249675

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows 95/98 client, version 9.0
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows NT client, version 9.0

SUMMARY

In Outlook, if the Contacts folder is set to receive personal addresses, then a user cannot add an address to the Personal Address Book (PAB).

MORE INFORMATION

A user's MAPI profile can have an Outlook Address Book and a Personal Address Book in it. The PAB resides on the computer and must be accessed there, while the Contacts folder can be accessed from anywhere because is part of the mailbox,. Once the MAPI profile is configured with the Outlook Address Book and PAB services, the user can choose where personal addresses are kept.

To select where personal addresses are kept:

  • On the Tools menu, click Services. On the Addressing tab, in the Keep personal addresses in list, click the location you want to store personal addresses in.
If this setting points to the PAB, when you right-click an address in a received message you have a choice of adding the address to the PAB, or the Contacts folder. However, if this setting points to the Contacts folder, when you right-click an address, you can only add the address to the Contacts folder. You no longer have the choice of adding it to the PAB.

This is to encourage users to use the Contacts folder rather than the PAB, since the PAB is specific to the computer where it is created.

NOTE: In Outlook 97 and Outlook 98, the user cannot add addresses to the Contacts folder even when it is in the profile as an Outlook Address Book. Personal addresses can only be added to the PAB.
