FoxPro for Windows Distribution Kit Builds Compact .EXEs

ID: Q99837

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Visual FoxPro for Windows, version 3.0
  • Microsoft FoxPro for Windows, versions 2.5, 2.5a
  • Microsoft FoxPro Distribution Kit for Windows, versions 2.5 and 2.5a

SUMMARY

On the bottom-left corner of the FoxPro for Windows Distribution Kit, the description states that the kit can be used to build a "complete stand- alone application." This description does not mean that a stand-alone .EXE file can be built with the FoxPro for Windows Distribution Kit--only a compact .EXE can be built with the FoxPro for Windows Distribution Kit.

The definition of stand-alone application on the FoxPro for Windows Distribution Kit box refers to the fact that the application itself is stand-alone because it does not require the full development version of FoxPro for Windows. This terminology is used because developers in the Windows environment are accustomed to shipping associated files with an application.

MORE INFORMATION

The FoxPro for Windows Distribution Kit manual also states that only a compact .EXE file can be built with the kit. The FoxPro for MS-DOS Distribution Kit, however, will allow the creation of a stand-alone .EXE file. A stand-alone .EXE file is a single file that does not require associated support libraries. A compact .EXE file requires support libraries to be shipped along with it.
