Err Msg: Cannot Start Communications with the Desktop Computer

SYMPTOMS

When you establish an infrared connection between a Handheld PC (H/PC) and a desktop computer, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. No carrier was detected on the communications port. Please verify that the communications line is connected and active.


CAUSE

This error message can occur if any of the following conditions exists:

  • The infrared port is in direct sunlight.


  • The infrared port is not within range to establish a connection.


  • The infrared device is not receiving adequate power.



RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the following steps, checking to see if the issue is resolved after each step:

  1. Position your infrared ports out of direct sunlight.


  2. Move your infrared ports within the connection range. Infrared devices should be no more than 3 to 6 feet apart and no less than 6 to 9 inches apart. The angle of the cone of infrared transmission is 30 degrees.


  3. Install new batteries in your infrared device or plug in an AC adapter.
