PRB: No Eastern European Code Page Support on Windows CE 2.0

ID: Q199254

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows CE versions 1.0, 2.0 for the Handheld PC

SYMPTOMS

When users try to save text other than code page 1252 (Latin 1) in Windows CE 2.0, the data is lost.

CAUSE

For example, when a user tries to save Latin 2 (code page 1250) or other Eastern European characters (code page 1251, 1253) into a file in Pocket Word 2.0, those data are lost. The default NLS file for Windows CE is located in \Windows\Wince.nls and can not be changed in version 2.0.

RESOLUTION

Eastern European code page will not be supported in the current version (version 2.0); this may be implemented in the next version.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Among the Windows CE 2.0 versions for different languages, none of the Central/Eastern European languages are included. Currently Windows CE versions are available for German, French, Italian, Neutral Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Brazilian Portuguese (these are all using the same Latin 1 code page 1252), and Japanese.
