Issues with Backup and Restore from v3.0 to v3.01 ROM Upgrade

SYMPTOMS

The following issues are fixed in Mircorosft Windows CE version 3.01 that may not work properly after you perform a back up operation of a computer running Windows CE version 3.0 and a restore to a computer running Windows CE version 3.01.

  • Connection to some secure sites may not work if the connection immediately follows a connection to a site with a differeent security level or if the target site has different security levels within the same site.


  • Character rendering in Pocket Internet Explorer is very slow.


  • The Microsoft Powerpoint device side converter does no work after the upgrade and Microsoft Powerpoint 97 files are displayed with generic icons.



CAUSE

This issue may occur if you upgrade your Handheld PC Pro 3.0 ROM to version 3.01 and a backup is done of your version 3.0 data and you then restore it after installing your version 3.01 ROM. In this case, some registry entries that are set up by your version 3.01 upgrade may be overwritten. This is because the backup and restore utility always restores the registry when no operating system change is detected. Both version 3.0 and version 3.01 run on the same version of the operating system.

The registry settings that get overwritten are the new ones added for version 3.01. As a result, some of the fixes and enhancements in version 3.01 may not work properly.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next update that contains this fix.
