1. INSTALLING ACTIVESYNC 3.0
-----------------------------------
1.1 Preparing for upgrade
If you are upgrading from a version of Windows CE Services (2.2 or
earlier), it is recommended that you first synchronize and back up your
device using your current version of Windows CE Services, and save the
backup file in a safe location. Be sure to disconnect your device before
starting the upgrade process.
1.2 Personal information manager (PIM) installation
If the Microsoft Outlook 2000 CD is included with your device, it is
recommended that you install it first before installing or upgrading to
ActiveSync.
1.3 Installing ActiveSync
To begin installation, insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive and wait for
the Setup program to be started automatically. If the program does not
start, click Start, then Run, and type d:\Setup, where d: is the drive
letter of your CD-ROM drive.
After the Setup program starts, follow the instructions on the screen.
-----------------------------------
2. OPTIONAL COMPONENTS ON THE CD
-----------------------------------
The Extras folder on your ActiveSync 3.0 CD contains the following
additional programs that may be of interest to you.
2.1 Microsoft Internet Explorer 5
The Mobile Channels feature on your Palm-size PC requires Internet Explorer
4.0 or later with the Active Desktop to perform Channel synchronization
with your desktop computer. Install Internet Explorer 5 before enabling the
Channel Sync feature. To install Internet Explorer 5, open the IE5 folder
and run the Setup.exe program. An NT4SP4 folder can be found in the Ie5\En
folder and contains a Service Pack that you may need to install if prompted
by the Setup program. After you install the Service Pack, you should
install the Y2K patches available in the I386\Y2K folder.
2.2 Microsoft Schedule+ 7.0a
If you do not have a personal information manager (PIM), such as Microsoft
Outlook, installed on your computer, you may want to install Microsoft
Schedule+ to synchronize data with your mobile device. To install
Schedule+, open the SPlus folder and run the Setup.exe program. After you
install Schedule+, you should install the Y2K patch available in the Y2K
folder.
2.3 Microsoft Expedia Pocket Streets 3.0
You may want to install Microsoft Expedia Pocket Streets on your mobile
device to give you instant access to maps and other information about many
major cities in the U.S. You can search for locations of interest or street
addresses, and quickly locate them on the map. To install Pocket Streets,
open the Pstreets folder and run the Setup.exe program. Look for updates
on http://www.microsoft.com/pocketstreets.
-----------------------------------
3. KNOWN ISSUES
-----------------------------------
ActiveSync no longer installs or depends on Remote Access Services (RAS)
for Windows NT or Dial-Up Networking (DUN) for Windows 95/98 by default.
-To connect your mobile device via modem directly to your desktop computer,
you will need to install inbound RAS/DUN on your desktop computer. For
information on how to install and configure RAS/DUN, see the accompanying
"ReadRas.doc." If RAS/DUN is used to connect to your desktop computer, some
advanced features, such as automatic baud rate detection, are not
supported.
-Some programs may depend on the IP networking provided by RAS/DUN and
might not work as expected until RAS/DUN is manually installed on the
desktop computer. Many programs have been tested; however, some programs
that used Windows CE Services to route network requests through the desktop
computer in a nonstandard way may not work.
If you are using Infrared (IR) to connect a previous version of Windows CE
Services to your mobile device, it is possible that you may see the
Infrared port as 'Unavailable' in the Get Connected Wizard after upgrading
to ActiveSync 3.0. If this happens, you may need to disable IR, reboot your
desktop machine, and re-enable IR. Please consult Windows Help and IR
documentation for more details on how to disable and enable Infrared. On
Windows 95, you can find the Infrared Help topics under "Infrared Monitor,
turning on infrared communication". On Windows 98, you can find the
Infrared Help topics under "Infrared communication, turning on,off". On
Windows 2000, you can find the Infrared Help topics under "Infrared links,
enabling receiving files".
