Error Message: "Device not recognized. MS ActiveSync Does Not Recognize the CE Device." with Serial-to-USB Conversion Hub Synchronization

ID: Q245687

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft ActiveSync 3.0
  • Microsoft Windows CE Services versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.2

SYMPTOMS

When a serial-to-Universal Serial Bus (USB) conversion hub (such as the Entrega Technologies Multi-Function USB Hub) is used to synchronize a Windows CE device to a desktop computer, the following may occur:

  • The Windows CE device does not communicate with the desktop computer and is not recognized, prohibiting synchronization or a partnership from being created.

  • The Windows CE device may communicate with the desktop computer during the initial connection, but if the CE device is disconnected and then reconnected, it does not communicate with the desktop computer until the desktop computer is restarted.

  • The following error message may be displayed if the ActiveSync 3.0 Get Connected wizard is run:
Device not recognized. MS ActiveSync does not recognize the CE Device.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the serial to USB conversion hub synchronization method is not supported by Windows CE Services.

Supported communications methods for ActiveSync 3.0 and Windows CE Services 2.x are:

  • Direct serial cable connection (or serial dial-up with a modem)

  • Infrared connection (IR)

  • NEC 2000 compatible Ethernet connection

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the above supported methods to communicate between the Windows CE device and a desktop computer. See the Help files or the Readme documents for information on configuring these options. The infrared connection is recommended for system's lacking legacy serial ports.
