How to Prevent the Game Device Profiler from Loading

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

This article describes how to prevent the Game Device Profiler from loading when you start Windows. You can reduce the amount of memory being used by your computer by reducing the number of programs that run when you start Windows.

This article also describes how to start the Game Device Profiler and how to place a Game Device Profiler icon on the taskbar.

To prevent the Game Device Profiler from loading when you start Windows, use one of the following methods.

  • Run the Profdel.exe file. This file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center on the World Wide Web.


  • Delete the Daemon value name from the following registry key:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run 

Download the Profdel.exe File

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center. Click the file name below to download the file:
Profdel.exe

and then click How to use the Microsoft Download Center. After you have prevented the Game Device Profiler from loading automatically, you may need to run it manually. To do this, use the steps outlined in the "Starting Game Device Profiler" section later in this article.

Start the Game Device Profiler

To start the Game Device Profiler, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Hardware, point to Gaming Devices, and then click Game Device Profiler.

NOTE: This procedure does not place the Game Device Profiler icon on the taskbar.

Place the Game Device Profiler Icon on the Taskbar

To place the Game Device Profiler icon on the taskbar, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.


  2. In the Open box, type the following line (with the quotation marks), and then click OK:


  3. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Gaming Devices\daemon32.exe"

    NOTE: If you do not type the quotation marks, you may receive the following error message:
    Cannot find the file 'C:\Program' (or one of its components). Make sure that the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
NOTE: These steps do not start the Game Device Profiler.

Resume Loading the Game Device Profiler When You Start Windows

To resume loading the Game Device Profiler when you start Windows, remove and then reinstall the Microsoft SideWinder game pad software.
