SYMPTOMS

When you install the SideWinder Game Device software, you may receive the following error message:

A limitation exists with your computer's resources or configuration.

Setup can't install Microsoft SideWinder Game Device software on your current operating system.

Check your Microsoft SideWinder Game Device software product packaging for system requirements.


CAUSE

This error message can occur for any of the following reasons:

  • You are not using Microsoft Windows 95/98.


  • You are using the Make Compatible program (Mkcompat.exe).



RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the appropriate method:

Install Windows 95/98

Windows 95/98 is a system requirement for the SideWinder Game Device software. To install Windows, use the instructions included with the operating system.

Configure the Make Compatible Program

To resolve this error message, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.


  2. In the Named box, type "mkcompat.exe" (without the quotation marks), and then click Find Now.


  3. Double-click the Mkcompat.exe file.


  4. On the File menu, click Choose Program, click any program that you configured to use the Make Compatible program, and then click Open.


  5. Click the Lie About Windows Version Number check box to clear it.


  6. Repeat steps 4-5 for each program that you configured to use the Make Compatible program.


  7. Quit Make Compatible, and then close the Find dialog box.


  8. Test to see if you can install the SideWinder Game Device software. If you can install the software, skip the remaining step. If you continue to receive the error message, continue to the next step.


  9. Rename the Mkcompat.exe file (for example, rename the file to Mkcompat.xxx). For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "renaming, files" (without the quotation marks), and then click Display. Click "Changing the name of a file or folder," and then click Display.


  10. Restart your computer.
