Problems Configuring Game Controllers When You Press Mode Button

SYMPTOMS

If you press the Mode button on the SideWinder game pad when you use the Game Controllers tool in Control Panel to configure a SideWinder game controller, the selected game controller may not function properly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the following conditions are true:

• The Microsoft SideWinder Game Device software is not installed.



• You connect a SideWinder joystick to the SideWinder game pad, and then connect the SideWinder game pad to the computer.



• You press the Mode button on the SideWinder game pad when the Test screen for the currently selected game controller is open.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, download and install the latest version of the SideWinder Game Device software from the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/sidewinder

The default Joystick tool or Game Controllers tool in Windows 95 and Windows 98 does not support the Mode button on the SideWinder game pad. The Microsoft SideWinder Game Device software correctly supports the Mode button on the SideWinder game pad.
