SideWinder: Cannot Shut Down Computer After You Connect USB Game Controller

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to shut down or restart your computer while a Microsoft SideWinder game controller is connected to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on the computer, the computer may stop responding (hang) or you may receive a fatal exception error message.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one or more of the following conditions exist:

  • Norton Anti-Virus is installed on your computer.


  • The Disable Fast Shutdown setting is enabled.


  • Microsoft Windows 98 attempts to unload the USB drivers for the SideWinder game controller more than once.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Disable or Remove Norton Anti-Virus

For information about how to disable or remove Norton Anti-Virus, please consult the printed or online documentation provided with the program.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Enable the Fast Shutdown Setting in Windows 98

To enable the Fast Shutdown setting in Windows 98, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.


  2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.


  3. On the General Tab, click Advanced.


  4. Click to clear the Disable Fast Shutdown check box if it is selected, click OK, and then click OK again.


  5. On the File menu, click Exit.


If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Disconnect the SideWinder Game Controller from the USB Port

Disconnect the SideWinder game controller from the USB port on your computer before you shut down the computer, or connect the SideWinder game controller directly to the game port on your computer before you restart the computer.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.
