The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft SideWinder Game Device software version 2.0
Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software, you may receive either of the following error messages:

Setup can't install the GPSECURE.SYS file and cannot complete installation.

Setup can't install the ACTIVA~1.EXE file and cannot complete installation.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:

Norton AntiVirus is running on your computer.

An undefined compatibility issue exists.

The SideWnder Game Controller software CD-ROM is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restart your computer, quit Norton AntiVirus, and then run Setup again. To do this:

Remove the installation CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive.

Restart the computer.

Right-click the Norton AntiVirus icon on the taskbar, and then click Disable Auto-Protect.

Run the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller Software Setup program again.

This issue has been reported to occur if a file from a prior installation of a Thrustmaster game controller remains on the computer. To resolve this issue:

Click Start, Point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

In the Named box, type tm.exe.

In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.

In the list of found files, right-click the Tm.exe file (if it exists) located in the Windows\System folder, and then click Rename.

Type tm.old, and then press ENTER.

Close the Find: Files Named Tm.exe window.
