SideWinder Precision Pro USB: Game Controllers Tool Reports Status as Not Connected

SYMPTOMS

When you connect the Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro joystick to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on your computer, the Game Controllers tool in Control Panel may report a status of Not Connected for the SideWinder Precision Pro.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the USB components are not installed properly on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove and reinstall the USB components. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.



2. Double-click System.



3. Click the Device Manager tab.



4. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Universal Serial Bus Controller to expand the branch.



5. Click to select each device listed in the Universal Serial Bus Controller branch, and then click Remove. Continue until the Universal Serial Bus Controller branch is empty.
   
   NOTE: You can only remove one device at a time.



6. Shut down and turn off your computer.



7. Turn on your computer. Windows automatically redetects your hardware and installs the appropriate device drivers.
   
   NOTE: You may be prompted to insert your Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM.



8. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.



9. Double-click Game Controllers, and then check the status of the Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro joystick.
   
   NOTE: If the Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro does not appear in the list of game controllers, click Add, click to select the SideWinder Precision Pro in the list of game controllers, and then click OK.
