SideWinder Force Feedback: Return To Center Force Does Not Function in Certain Games

ID: Q224555

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator: WWII Europe Series, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 98
  • Microsoft Motocross Madness, version 1.0
  • Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Pro, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Urban Assault, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Force Feedback Pro joystick with any of the Microsoft programs listed at the beginning of this article, the Return To Center force is disabled. However, the Return To Center force functions properly on the Test Forces tab in the Game Controllers tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because some games disable the Return To Center force to allow you to feel subtle forces such as wind or a stall, and to duplicate the feel of a plane's joystick or yoke, which in real life does not return to center automatically.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

If you disable all forces, the SideWinder Force Feedback Pro joystick emulates a normal joystick, and behaves as if it has a spring centering mechanism.

For additional information about how to enable the Return To Center force, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
