SideWinder: Joystick or Game Controllers Icon Is Missing From Control Panel

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to test your game controller using the Joystick or Game Controllers tool in Control Panel, the Joystick or Game Controllers icon may be missing.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Joy.cpl file is missing or damaged.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Download and Install the Most Recent Version of Microsoft DirectX

Extract a New Copy of the Joy.cpl File

Extract a new copy of the Joy.cpl file from the Microsoft Windows CD-ROM or the appropriate floppy disk to the following folder
<drive>:\Windows\System
where <drive> is the hard disk on which Windows is installed.

Reinstall Microsoft Windows

To reinstall Windows:
  1. Insert the Windows CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, or insert the Windows Disk 1 floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.


  2. Click Start, and then click Run.


  3. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK
    <drive>:\setup
    where <drive> is the letter of your CD-ROM or floppy disk drive.


  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall Windows.

    NOTE: You may have to reinstall the SideWinder Game Controller software after you reinstall Windows.
