SideWinder Error Message: Mouse SetCooperativeLevel Failed

SYMPTOMS

When you start a program that requires you to use a joystick, you may encounter any of the following symptoms:

  • You may receive the following error message:

    Mouse SetCooperativeLevel Failed!
  • The Game Controllers tool may be missing from Control Panel.


  • You may be unable to calibrate your Gravis game controller.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Gravis Xperience software version 2.0 or later is installed on your computer.


RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, remove the Gravis Xperience software version 2.0 and install the Gravis Xperience software version 1.0. You can download and install the Gravis Xperience software version 1.0 from the following Gravis Web site:

If the Game Controllers tool is missing from Control Panel, you need to restore a backup copy of the Joy.cpl file. To do this:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.


  2. In the Named box, type joy.bak.


  3. In the Look In box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.


  4. In the list of found files, right-click Joy.bak, and then click Rename.


  5. Type joy.cpl, and then press ENTER.


  6. Close the Find: Files Named Joy.bak window.


  7. Restart the computer.
