MSINPUT.INI Settings Not Read at Startup at MS-DOS Level

ID: Q120469

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Natural Keyboard with IntelliType software, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

The settings for the Repeat Delay and Repeat Rate options in the IntelliType Manager are not correctly initialized after the first startup at the MS-DOS level.

CAUSE

The Microsoft Natural Keyboard driver version 1.0 sets the options for Repeat Delay and Repeat Rate only after the second initialization of the settings within the MSINPUT.INI file. (All other settings take effect after the first initialization of the MSINPUT.INI file.)

RESOLUTION

Entering the command KBDCPL /S at an MS-DOS command prompt initializes the MSINPUT.INI file a second time. This command can also be added to the existing Microsoft Natural Keyboard entries found in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The new line should be identical to the existing KBDCPL.EXE /S already found in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft Natural Keyboard with IntelliType software version 1.00. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The settings for the Repeat Delay and Repeat Rate options are set upon entering Windows. The MSINPUT.INI file is first initialized at the MS-DOS level through the AUTOEXEC.BAT file; it is initialized a second time during the initialization of the Microsoft Natural Keyboard settings when you start Windows.
