Windows Key Does Not Start Alternate Task Swapper

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Microsoft Natural Keyboard you cannot use the Windows key to start task-switching software other than TASKSW16.EXE. Using the CTRL+ESC key combination or double-clicking the desktop may start the task-switching program you want.

CAUSE

The Windows key on the Microsoft Natural Keyboard will not start another task-switching program if TASKSW16.EXE can be found on the path.

RESOLUTION

To use the Windows key to start a different task-switching program, follow these steps:

1. Open the SYSTEM.INI file in any text editor (such as Notepad) and modify the line that reads

   TASKMAN=TASKSW16.EXE

   to read

   TASKMAN=<task manager>

   where <task manager> is the name of the executable file you want to start when you press the Windows key.



2. Rename the TASKSW16.EXE file or move it to a directory that is not on the path.



3. Save and then close the SYSTEM.INI file and then restart your computer.
