IntelliPoint: Cannot Recover Msmouse.vxd File After You Reinstall IntelliPoint Software

SYMPTOMS

After you reinstall the Microsoft IntelliPoint software, you can no longer recover the original Msmouse.vxd file included in Microsoft Windows.


CAUSE

The IntelliPoint installation program renames the current Msmouse.vxd file to Msmouse.old during the installation of the IntelliPoint software.

When you reinstall the IntelliPoint software, you overwrite the original Msmouse.vxd file included in Windows with the Msmouse.vxd file included in the IntelliPoint software.


RESOLUTION

To restore the original Msmouse.vxd file included in Microsoft Windows, use the appropriate method for your operating system.

Microsoft Windows 98

Use System File Checker to extract these files from the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

Microsoft Windows 95

Reinstall Windows 95 to replace the missing Msmouse.vxd file.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

To prevent this issue from occurring, use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to remove the IntelliPoint software before you reinstall the IntelliPoint software:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  3. Click Microsoft IntelliPoint, and then click Add/Remove.


  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the IntelliPoint software. If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.


This issue has been corrected in the Microsoft IntelliPoint software, version 3.0.
