"Out of Memory" Error Message Starting Internet Explorer

ID: Q134362

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Error: Out of memory. Close some programs, and then try again.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if virtual memory has been disabled.

RESOLUTION

To enable virtual memory, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the System icon.

  3. On the Performance tab, click Virtual Memory.

  4. Click the "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings (recommended)" option. Or, if you must use your own virtual memory settings, allow as much space as possible for the maximum size.

  5. Click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

If virtual memory is disabled, Internet Explorer (and other programs that create large temporary files) may not start or may generate error messages, even if there is enough RAM available. Such programs check for the ability to create a swap file as needed and may not run if this cannot be done.

This error message can also occur if available disk space is low.
