SYMPTOMS

When you connect to the Internet using a third-party Internet service provider and you try to view a newsgroup using the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer included with Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95, you may receive the following error message:

Unable to read news:
Mcm.dll is missing entry point NewsProtocolHandler.
You may have an incorrect version of Mcm.dll. Try setting up your news program again.


CAUSE

Internet Explorer 1.0 supports the "news:" protocol only when connected to the Internet using MSN, The Microsoft Network.


RESOLUTION

This issue is corrected in version 2.0 of Internet Explorer.

MORE INFORMATION

The version of MSN included with Windows 95 does not support the "news:" protocol. When you upgrade to MSN version 1.05 (included in Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95, or available for download on MSN), a new Mcm.dll file is installed. This new file supports the "news:" protocol when you use MSN to access newsgroups.
