Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 3.1
SUMMARY
When you connect to the Internet using an independent Internet service
provider, an Internet Protocol (IP) address and Domain Name Server (DNS)
address may be automatically assigned to you (using Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP)).
In some cases, these numbers must be manually assigned to each user of the
service. These are called static addresses. Internet Explorer for Windows
3.1 does not, by default, support static Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) information for use while connecting to
your Internet service provider.
This article describes how to configure a connection to use static IP and
DNS server addresses.
MORE INFORMATION
First, locate the connection (.con) file that corresponds to the
connection icon. To do so, follow these steps:
- Using any text editor (such as Notepad), open a .con file.
- Look at the Description line to see if it is the correct file.
- If this is not the correct file, close the file and open the next
.con file. Repeat until you locate the correct .con file.
Once you have located the correct file, modify the lines in [IP] section
to match the settings you need to use. These lines are described below:
- UseSpecificIpAddr = No / Yes
This should be set to Yes if you were assigned an IP address by your
Internet service provider.
- SpecificNameServers = No / Yes
This should be set to Yes if your Internet service provider assigned
you a specific DNS address.
- SpecificIPAddress=0.0.0.0
This should be set to the IP address assigned to you by your Internet
service provider. It is not used unless the "UseSpecificIpAddr=" line
is set to Yes.
- DNSAddress=0.0.0.0
DNSAddress2=0.0.0.0
This is the Domain Name server and Backup Name server. Enter these
addresses if they were provided by your Internet service provider. These
lines are ignored if the "SpecificNameServers=" line is set to No.
