JIS-Encoded Documents May Not Be Displayed Properly with PWS

ID: Q163900

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Personal Web Server version 1.0 for Macintosh

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to access a Web page that uses Japanese character set (JIS) encoding on a computer running Microsoft Personal Web Server for Macintosh, the page may not be displayed properly.

CAUSE

Personal Web Server for Macintosh supports a subset of the Active Server Pages functionality available with Microsoft Internet Information Server and treats all files with .asp, .html, and .htm extensions as Active Server Pages files. When Active Server Pages files are processed, all instances of the "<%" character combination are removed. If the HTML file associated with the Web page you are attempting to access contains instances of this character combination, all instances are removed and the page may not be displayed properly. The "<%" character combination is common in JIS-encoded HTML files.

RESOLUTION

To prevent Personal Web Server from displaying JIS-encoded Web pages, use the .jis extension on HTML files associated with the Web pages instead of the .html or .htm extension.

MORE INFORMATION

JIS encoding is used in Web pages that use the JIS character set. JIS is a non-Windows character set that is frequently used in Japanese Web pages.
