How to Publish to a Sub-Folder of AOL with Web Publishing Wizard

ID: Q232913

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard, version 1.6 for Windows 98
  • Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard version 1.6 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you use Web Publishing Wizard to publish pages to your America Online (AOL) account, and you use a path for your Web page that specifies a sub-folder under your screen name (such as "members.aol.com/your screen name/test, the page may be published to the members.aol.com/your screen name folder. This may result in previously published Web pages in this folder being damaged when files are overwritten.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue:

  1. Connect to AOL, and verify that you have already created a sub-folder by using the AOL FTP tool.

  2. Start Web Publishing Wizard, and then click Next in the "Publish your Files on the Web" dialog box.

  3. Type an appropriate name in the Name the Web Server box. Note that you may want to use the name of the sub-folder. Click Next.

  4. In the Specify the URL and Directory box, type aol.com/sub-folder name, where sub-folder name is the appropriate folder name. Click Next.

NOTE: The "members" portion or your user name is omitted from the path of the server (members.aol.com), as is your screen name.

  5. When you are prompted to enter a user name and password, use your screen name and password, and then click Next.

  6. If you receive a "Specify a Connection Method" message, click Next, click FTP in the Select Your Connection Method box, and then click Next.

  7. Note that in the Specify the FTP Server and Subfolder box, the FTP server name appears as "aol.com", and the AOL screen name does not appear anywhere. Also, the sub-folder shown is the sub-folder under the screen name where this page will be published. Replace aol.com with members.aol.com, and the page will be published to the following Web address:
    http://members.aol.com/screen name/sub-folder name
Click Next, and then click Finish.
