PRB: JavaScript Errors, Broken Images, and Links Over SSL

ID: Q190052

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (Programming) versions 4.0, 4.01, used with:
    • Microsoft Windows 95
    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When connecting to Netscape's Enterprise Server 3.0 or 3.5.1 using SSL (https://), Internet Explorer 4.0x irregularly reports "Unrecognized Response" server connection errors, fails to display images, or reports JavaScript errors.

CAUSE

This is a mutual problem due to the interaction of Internet Explorer 4.0x and Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 or 3.5.1.

Netscape Enterprise Server is unexpectedly terminating persistent connections under SSL.

Internet Explorer 4.0x attempts to resend an HTTP request along persistent connections only a fixed number of times. If Enterprise Server unexpectedly terminates more than one persistent connection, Internet Explorer stops attempting to send the request and displays an error message or broken image.

RESOLUTION

Netscape has released a 3.5.1 G patch to Enterprise Server that resolves this and other SSL related problems.

MORE INFORMATION

At this time, this problem is not known to occur with any other HTTP server product other than Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 or 3.5.1. If this problem is encountered with other HTTP servers, we will post more information in this Knowledge Base article.
