BUG: 16-Bit Internet Explorer Fails on Secure Sites Using Proxy

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.03 for Windows 3.1
  • Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0


SYMPTOMS

When attempting to use the 16-bit version (Windows 3.1) of Internet Explorer to communicate across Microsoft Proxy Server, using NTLM (challenge-response) authentication, the user is prompted for credentials (user name and password) three times, regardless of whether the credentials are valid or not. Afterward, an "Access is Denied" error message appears.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT service pack that contains this fix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
