Err Msg: MMSYSTEM261 The Command Used Is Not...

ID: Q154603

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document in Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

MMSYSTEM261 The command used is not a valid MCI command.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the HTML document references a .wav file as the dynamic source for an image tag. (for example, <IMG DYNSRC="http://www.yoursite/sound.wav">.)

Note that when you receive this error message, the .wav file is played after you clear the error message.

RESOLUTION

The dynamic source for an Image tag must be an .avi file (a video clip) or a Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) world.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use the Dynamic Source HTML attribute (DYNSRC) to include inline multimedia documents or VRLM worlds directly on a Web page. The syntax to use is the following:

<IMG DYNSRC="MyMovie.avi" >
NOTE: Replace "MyMovie.avi" with the file name or full Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the .avi file or VMRL world you want to display.
