VRML 3-D World Spins or Moves Erratically Using a Joystick

ID: Q154653

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 2.0, 3.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you enter a 3-D virtual world using the Microsoft Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) Add-In for Internet Explorer 2.0 or 3.0, you may be unable to navigate through the world using a joystick, or the world may spin or move continuously without input. You may also receive the following error message:

VRML Add-In - Joystick

Your joystick does not appear to be centered. It may need to be recalibrated to work properly with the VRML Add-In.

CAUSE

Your joystick may need to be calibrated for use with Windows 95.

RESOLUTION

To calibrate your joystick in Windows 95, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Joystick.

NOTE: If there is no Joystick icon in Control Panel, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q141854 How to Troubleshoot a GamePort Joystick

  2. Make sure the Current Joystick and Joystick Configuration settings are correct for your joystick. For information on how to do this, consult the manufacturer's documentation included with your joystick.

  3. Click Calibrate to begin the calibration process. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  4. When you have finished the joystick calibration process, click OK.

If you follow these steps and the virtual world still behaves erratically, adjust the controls on your joystick. Most analog joysticks have adjustment wheels or sliders that can be used to compensate for joystick drift. Adjust these controls until the virtual world stops spinning or moving, and then calibrate your joystick again using the above steps.
