Internet Explorer Plays .AU or .AIFF Audio Files

ID: Q154914

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 2.0, 3.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows NT, version 2.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you have a program other than Internet Explorer associated with .au or .aiff file types and you click a link in Internet Explorer to play one of these file types, Internet Explorer plays the file instead of using the associated program.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. Rather than calling an external program to play .au and .aiff files, Internet Explorer plays the files directly.

RESOLUTION

To use a different program to play .au and .aiff files, follow these steps:

  1. Use the right mouse button to click the link.

  2. Click Save Target As on the menu that appears, and save the file to your hard disk.

  3. Double-click the file on your hard disk.
