HTML Local Anchors to Bottom of Web Page Do Not Work

ID: Q154927

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02a for Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

If an Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) local anchor link links to the bottom of a Web page, the link only refreshes the page unless a character is placed between the HTML <A NAME="word"></A> tags at the bottom of the page.

RESOLUTION

Although most local anchor links to the <A NAME="word"></A> tags through- out a page work without placing anything between the tags, they do not work with a link to the very bottom of the page. One workaround to this behavior is to type &nbsp; between the <A NAME="word"> and </A> tags.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.x. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
