URL in Internet Explorer Converted to IP Address

ID: Q155129

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02a for Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When you type a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Address box in Internet Explorer, it may be converted to an Internet Protocol (IP) address. For example, if you type

http://www.microsoft.com/ie
Internet Explorer may convert it to:
http://198.105.232.4/ie/

CAUSE

The Web server you are connecting to may be using Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) version 1.0.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the URL from being converted to an IP address, type the URL with a trailing slash. For example, type:

http://www.microsoft.com/ie/

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

There have been reported problems with some Java programs not functioning properly when the URL is converted to an IP address. Check the URL if a page is not being displayed as it should and see if the URL has been converted to an IP address. If so, type the address again with a trailing slash as an additional troubleshooting step.

When redirected, the Web server does not know the URL that corresponds to the IP address, so it uses the IP address in place of the URL.
