Cannot Install Plug-Ins If Netscape Navigator Not Installed

ID: Q155339

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02a for Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 95 and Netscape Navigator is not installed on your computer, you may be unable to install some Netscape plug-ins. If you install Netscape Navigator on your computer, you are able to install the plug-ins. This issue is known to occur with the following plug-ins:

  • Astound Web Player for Windows

  • AutoDesk Whip! Plug-in

  • Corel CMX Viewer

  • SoftSource DWG/DXF Plug-in

CAUSE

This issue can occur when a plug-in attempts to determine if Netscape Navigator is installed on your computer before proceeding with the installation process. If these plug-ins cannot determine that Netscape Navigator is installed by detecting the presence of the Netscape executable file (Netscape.exe) or Netscape-specific registry entries, the installation process does not continue and the plug-in is not installed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Contact the manufacturer of the plug-in to inquire about an ActiveX control that provides the same functionality as the plug-in. If Internet Explorer is unable to locate the plug-in necessary for an object found on a particular Web page, it automatically attempts to locate an ActiveX control that provides the same functionality.

  • Contact the manufacturer of the Netscape plug-in to inquire about obtaining the file(s) associated with the plug-in, instead of obtaining a self-extracting executable file that contains the file(s) associated with the plug-in. Obtaining the individual file(s) associated with the plug-in allows you to bypass the installation process and prevent the problem described in this article from occurring.

  • Install Netscape Navigator, install the plug-ins you are unable to install when Netscape Navigator is not installed on your computer, and then remove Netscape Navigator.

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer is compatible with Netscape plug-ins, but some plug- ins cannot be installed unless Netscape Navigator is installed on your computer. Once the plug-in is installed, it functions properly if Netscape Navigator is not installed on the computer, but it cannot be installed unless Netscape Navigator is installed.

Netscape Navigator is manufactured by Netscape, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
