Error Deleting Temporary Internet Files Folder

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to delete the Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder, you receive the following error message:

Error Deleting File: Cannot delete MM256: Access Denied.
Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.


CAUSE

The Mm256.dat file is in use whether or not Internet Explorer is running.


RESOLUTION

To delete the Temporary Internet Files folder, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt from the Startup menu.


  2. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
    cd windows

    smartdrv

    deltree tempor~1


  3. Restart your computer normally.


  4. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Options on the View menu.


  5. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings in the Temporary Internet Files area.


  6. Click the Move Folder button, select the Temporary Internet Files folder in the Browse For Folder window, and then click OK.

    NOTE: This folder is typically: C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

    You are prompted with a message that you must restart Windows to have the new folder take effect.


  7. Click OK or Close until all dialog boxes are closed.


  8. Quit Internet Explorer and restart your computer.



MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer is not the only program that may be using the Temporary Internet Files folder to store files. If you delete this folder, it is re- created when Windows 95 restarts.
