Internet Explorer May Display Pipe Character (a Vertical Line) in Option List

ID: Q160629

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 2.0, 3.0, 3.01 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you view a Web page with a drop-down or scrollable list, you may see the vertical bar (|) character between items on a line.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the tab character is used between items on a line in the original Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) source document. Internet Explorer replaces the tab character with the vertical bar character when the tab character is used with the <option> tag.

RESOLUTION

If you are the author of the page, type a space between items on a line instead of typing the tab character, or use a different HTML technique to display the list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer versions 2.0, 3.0 and 3.01 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
