Internet Explorer Maintains Two Caches on Dual-Boot Computer

ID: Q161021

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 98
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that dual-boots Windows 95 or Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0, Internet Explorer maintains two identical caches. When you are browsing, Internet Explorer adds the files to both caches. When you clear the cache, Internet Explorer deletes the files from both caches.

CAUSE

Internet Explorer creates the Temporary Internet Files folder in both the Windows and Winnt folders. For caching purposes, Internet Explorer sees both folders as the same and replicates all files in both folders.

RESOLUTION

To prevent Internet Explorer from maintaining duplicate cache files, use the same folder for both caches. To do so, use the appropriate method:

Internet Explorer 3.0, 3.01, and 3.02

  1. Start Internet Explorer in Windows 95.

  2. On the View menu, click Options.

  3. Click the Advanced tab.

  4. In the Temporary Internet Files area, click Settings.

  5. Click Move Folder and select a folder for the disk cache.

  6. Click OK or Close until all dialog boxes are closed.

  7. Quit Internet Explorer.

  8. Start Windows NT 4.0, and then start Internet Explorer.

  9. Repeat steps 2-5. Select the same folder as you selected in step 5.

Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01

  1. Start Internet Explorer in Windows 95 or Windows 98.

  2. On the View menu, click Options.

  3. Click the General tab.

  4. In the Temporary Internet Files area, click Settings.

  5. Click Move Folder, click Yes, and select a folder for the disk cache.

  6. Click OK or Close until all dialog boxes are closed.

  7. Quit Internet Explorer.

  8. Start Windows NT 4.0, and then start Internet Explorer.

  9. Repeat steps 2-5. Select the same folder as you selected in step 5.

Internet Explorer 5

  1. Start Internet Explorer in Windows 95 or Windows 98.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  3. Click the General tab.

  4. In the Temporary Internet Files area, click Settings.

  5. Click Move Folder and select a folder for the disk cache.

  6. Click OK or Close until all dialog boxes are closed.

  7. Quit Internet Explorer.

  8. Start Windows NT 4.0, and then start Internet Explorer.
