File Association Remains After Uninstalling Internet Explorer

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click an Internet shortcut (.url) file, you may receive the following error message:

Program Not Found.
Windows Cannot Find Iexplore.exe.


CAUSE

When Internet Explorer is uninstalled, the file association for Internet shortcut files is not removed.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Delete the Internet Shortcut

To delete the Internet Shortcut file, right-click the file, click Delete on the menu that appears, and then click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the file deletion.

Remove the File Association

To remove the file association, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click My Computer.


  2. On the View menu, click Options.


  3. Click the File Types tab.


  4. In the Registered File Types box, click Internet Shortcut.


  5. Click Remove. When you are prompted to confirm the change, click Yes.


  6. Click Close.


The next time you double-click the Internet Shortcut file, you will receive a dialog box prompting you to select a program to use to open the file. For information about how to create a new file association, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
