Unable to Expand Internet Explorer .hqx Files

ID: Q164437

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.01a for Macintosh

SYMPTOMS

After you download Internet Explorer for Macintosh, Stuffit Expander may be unable to convert the BinHex-encoded files (.hqx) into an executable file.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you are using a Windows-based version of Stuffit Expander instead of a Macintosh-based version.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use a Macintosh-based version of Stuffit Expander.

MORE INFORMATION

Although the Windows-based version of Stuffit Expander states that it can convert .hqx files, Macintosh executable files cannot be converted by the Windows-based version. This may work in Windows NT, because Windows NT can run Macintosh services that allow its services to be access by Macintosh computers.

BinHex file encoding converts a binary file into a hexadecimal text representation. BinHex encoding and decoding is frequently used to transmit files between the Macintosh and PC platforms. BinHex-encoded files commonly have an .hqx file extension.
