Error Message: You Have an Invalid Version of the Inetcfg.dll...

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01 for Windows 95


SYMPTOMS

When you are running the Internet Startup Wizard in Windows 95, you may receive the following error message:

You have an invalid version of the Inetcfg.dll file on your computer


CAUSE

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.0 or 3.0 for Windows 3.1 with Mail, TCP/IP Stack, and Dialer for Windows was previously installed on the computer.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the Autoexec.bat file. The Autoexec.bat file is located in the root of the C drive.


  2. Disable or delete the following lines in the Autoexec.bat file. To disable these lines, place the word rem, and then press the SPACEBAR at the beginning of each line:
    
          Path = %PATH%;<Install Path>
          SET IEPPP = <Install Path>
          SET PCTCP = <Install Path>\PCTCP.SHV 
    where <Install Path> is the drive and folder Internet Explorer was installed in.


  3. Save and close the Autoexec.bat file.


  4. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the System.ini file. The System.ini file is located in the c:\Windows folder.


  5. Disable or delete the following lines in the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file. To disable these lines, place a semicolon (;) at the beginning of each line:
    
          Device=<Install Path>\iedial.386
          Device=<Install Path>\vxdpctcp.386
          Device=<Install Path>\iewcomm.386 (Only in Internet Explorer v3.0) 


  6. Save and close the System.ini file.


  7. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.


  8. Delete the Internet Explorer folder.

    For information about how to delete a folder, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type deleting, and then double-click the "Deleting files or folders" topic.


  9. Reinstall Internet Explorer for Windows 95.



MORE INFORMATION

The file that runs the Internet Connection Wizard is Icwconn1.exe. If the shortcut points to the old Icwconn1.exe file, the error message also occurs.
