Pasting Text into FrontPage Express Shows ASCII Characters

ID: Q166087

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you copy text formatted in Rich Text Format (RTF) and paste it into FrontPage Express (formally FrontPad), odd characters in may be displayed in FrontPage Express.

This behavior is specific to the FrontPage Express program that is included as part of Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01; it does not occur in the full version of FrontPage.

CAUSE

The ability to convert Rich Text Format (.rtf) files is not included in this limited version of FrontPage Express. The characters you see are American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) character codes.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Copy and paste your text into a non-RTF text editor such as Notepad.

This strips all formatting from the text.

  2. Copy the text from Notepad and then paste it into FrontPage Express.

NOTE: Because Notepad strips all formatting from the text, it is necessary to reapply any appropriate formatting after you paste the text into FrontPage Express.
