Opening Image in Internet Explorer 4.0 Causes Computer to Beep

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to view an image that has the same name as a reserved MS-DOS name, you computer may beep several times or the display may become garbled.

The following names are examples of file names that cause this behavior:

  • Con.gif


  • Prn.gif


  • Aux.gif



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.


MORE INFORMATION

When you view the same image in Internet Explorer version 2.0, your computer does not beep, but you may receive a cache error stating that the disk may be full.
