Uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 Option Is Missing

ID: Q172919

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

The "Uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 and all its components" option may not be available using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. The only available option may be "Add Windows Desktop Update component from Web site."

CAUSE

Internet Explorer 4.0 has an option to delete the Setup files and backup information that is necessary to uninstall Internet Explorer. Using this option prevents uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0 in the future. If you use this option, there is no way to uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior for Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98, manually uninstall Internet Explorer. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q175610 How to Manually Uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0

MORE INFORMATION

During any future attempt to install Internet Explorer 4.0, you receive the following message:

You are upgrading a version of Internet Explorer 4.0 in which the uninstall feature has been disabled. If you choose to continue, Setup will update your PC with the newer version, but the uninstall feature will remain disabled.
