Error Renaming Files or Folders with Thumbnail View Enabled

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you press the BACKSPACE key while you are renaming a file or folder in Windows Explorer or My Computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module THUMBVW.DLL.


  • An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
    Explorer.exe
    Exception: access violation (Oxc0000005), Address: 0x01b33404



CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the file or folder you are attempting to rename is displayed in Thumbnail view.


RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, disable Thumbnail view before you rename a file or folder. To do this, click a view option other than Thumbnails on the View menu.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer 4.01. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
